Smokie : The Smallest War Dog

Smokie, a Yorkshire Terrier weighing only 2kg, was the smallest dog to serve in the Pacific during WW2.

Her military career began when an American GI found her, abandoned, in a foxhole on the Island of New Guinea. Her savior gave her to another soldier who sold her to a member of the U.S. Army Air Force, William Wynne, for the equivalent of about $6.50. Smokie was stuck with Wayne from then on, flying12 combat missions with the Air Force's 26th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron. During the battle for the Philippines, she even dragged a communications cable 70 feet through an 8 inch wide pipe under an airplane runway.

After Yank magazine called Smokie the "the best mascot in the South Pacific", the tiny soldier started making moral visits to hospitals. She continued cheering up sick veterans until her death in 1957. Today a monument to this dog's achievements stands in Cleaveland

IT was Lee’s childhood dream to set up a doggy daycare and mobile pet grooming service.

Lee’s career as a pet groomer was her stepping stone towards the dream, which came true when she became partners with Lim, who ran a doggy daycare centre.

House call grooming is available every weekday afternoon while doggy daycare services are from 6pm to midnight on weekdays and noon to midnight on weekends.

The rates for a grooming session depends on the size of the dog. The rates are listed on instingt.blogspot.com.

“Usually a session takes four hours. I also need to comply to clients’ demands,” she said.
Clients are mostly housewives, home business owners and generally people who want to avoid the nasty traffic jams.

Cheong Aivy, 30, has been Lee’s client since March. “She is professional when it comes to her job and takes care of the pets like her own. She is very particular that the pets are perfectly groomed. She would also inform me of any infection,” she said.

The services are provided within the Klang Valley and the charges include transport. Extra charges are applicable for destinations a little further away.

The doggy daycare centre is at 105 Jalan Templer, Petaling Jaya.

Over Chinese New Year 2010, Instingt Pet Groomer has merged with The Dog House PJ.

Here's what we have come up with:

Dogs here are free to roam around as they please. They have free access to the main hall and dining area; totaling to about 500 square feet of indoor space. In these areas, there are tables, chairs, sofas and pens where they can curl up and rest, or chew on their precious toy.

For dogs who are considered aggressive or super fearful, they will have their individual playpen until they are ready to mix with the rest. These play pens are designed so that the dogs can see and sniff each other, they get to watch each others behavior; like body language & playfulness. They get to discover each other while being protected by a fence. The fence doesn't isolate the dogs and so they can still curl up and sleep next to each other, bodies and nose touching.

When we think the dogs are ready to mix with the rest, what we will do is open the pen slightly. The dog gets to choose to come out or remain inside. Meanwhile, the rest of the dogs will be prohibited to enter the pen. This is so that this individual will not be overwhelmed by the other dogs barging in and so-call 'conquering his/her space'.

At night, during bed time (6 hours), dogs who we are 'unsure' of will be put back into their pens or cages. It's bedtime, and after an exhausting day, they will most probably spend that 6 hours sleeping. When morning comes, they will have Garden-Time while we get them ready for the morning 1-hour-walk to start the day.

The Walk is not a lazy stroll; it's a steady speed, pack walk. Here is when we, the humans, establish pack leadership. The leader (alpha) position is important to establish so that we (humans) have psychological control over the dogs. With this psychological advantage, we may not have to physically correct dogs who are misbehaving, but only need to voice a gentle, calm "aik" or "wei". The pack walk is where dogs walk behind or beside us, never in front. Aside from establishing the humans as leaders of the pack, it also serves to burn off the energy that has been accumulated during their rest. Of course, dogs who tire easily (i.e. over weight, low energy, aging dogs) will walk less and at a slower pace. High energy, young and very active dogs will have a faster and longer walk. To understand more of the pack walk concept, please read Cesar Millan's books "Cesar's Way" and "Be The Pack Leader".

Note: We incorporate some of Cesar's Methods which we find practical & useful to us. We DO NOT follow them to the 'T'. We admire Cesar Millan and his simple approach to dealing with dogs, but we don't worship him ;)

During the rest of the day, dogs are free to roam inside the house, they are encourage to mingle, nap, chew toys, and engage in quiet-gentle play. Every 3 hours or so, they will go out into the garden (about 500 sq ft) where they can take on a more excited-energetic play, sprint up and down, play ball, poo-poo and pee-pee. In the evenings, the dogs will go on their second & final walk of the day. There will be a few more garden time before everyone calls it a day at 11pm.

One of our goals here is to have your dog go home tired, calm and satisfied. Ready to curl up, nuzzle and snooze on your lap, or under your feet. No more mid-night barking/howling for no good reason, herding kids around, tearing up furniture, no more pent up energy. This means no more angry neighbors, irritated spouse/parents, and no more Majilis Perbandaran at your door step.

Grooming style is primarily focused on dog's comfort and hygiene necessities. The secondary focus is on speed of groom. The tertiary focus is on beauty and perfect trim. Our ultimate grooming goal is to have the dog gradually learn to take pleasure in being groomed. Loads of praise and treats are used to reward positive behavior or used as a distraction. Firm (not hard) yet gentle handling is used to gradually correct negative behavior. Fears or mental trauma a dog may have from previous experience can be gradually removed (or at least reduced) through patient and gentle grooming.

When you visit us, whether to check out the place or to ask for price; we encourage you to bring your dog along. During the visit, we will give your dog tasty treats, and get to know your dog. Your dog also gets to roam the premise, get to know us and the resident dogs while you’re around. This way, it helps ease the dog and prepare him/her for the time when he/she has to be alone here by him/herself. At least, when time comes for your dog to stay here, he/she feels that he/she already knows the place, dogs and people here. That would make for a more comfortable stay.

NOTE: (Oct 2010) Dog walks have been canceled, because once owners see the Dog House, they decide that it it is unnecessary. From now on, dogs will be walked only upon request.

PETALING JAYA, 1 FEB, 2010: The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) urged the public to make sure that their pets especially dogs are in good condition before they leave their houses for the Chinese New Year holidays.

MBPJ also advised those who plan to leave their house for the holidays can send their dogs to a nursery or make sure that it has enough food before leaving it

“We need to prevent animal mistreatment. The local council need to educate society on what can be considered as animal abuse,” said Selangor Exco Dr. Xavier Jayakumar during a press conference for MBPJ's Management of Pets in Conjuntion with Chinese New Year 2010 held here today.

He added that pet owners should not leave animal without food or shelter as it is against the law and those who commit it will be brought to justice.

During the press coference that was held as part of their We Care for Your Pets campaign, Xavier also also asked the public to make sure that their dogs will not disturb other neighbour during the holiday period.

"KLANG DOG POUND : IS THIS YOUR DOG?”

This dog gazes out expectantly, hoping that his owner will come to get him out

1 DECEMBER, KLANG – Majlis Perbandaran Klang (MPK) is urging dog-owners and animal rescuers to come forward to claim more than 40 dogs in their dog pound, caught by their dog-catchers one week ago. The municipal had contacted SPCA Selangor and requested for help in creating awareness about the plight of the pound dogs, as their time was quickly running out.

The dogs were caught in the Bayu Perdana, Jalan Meru and Bandar Baru Klang area. Many of the dogs were wearing collars and were in good condition – they seemed to be lost or straying pets. The others appeared to be strays or long-abandoned pets, they are in poor condition – emaciated, infested with ticks and with skin problems. Both pet and stray dogs appeared to be distressed – the pound was the last place on earth where they wanted to be.

The SPCA Selangor Inspectors and vet visited the pound on Tuesday, bringing with them 2 big bags of dog food and medication. The dogs were being fed bread and water daily and the kennels were cleaned out by the staff.

Many of the strays have skin problems and are emaciated

MPK and SPCA Selangor have agreed that it will impose compulsory neutering as a condition of release for the claimed dogs – to prevent unwanted litters in the future.
Owners can claim their dogs until the 9th of December 2009, after which the dogs will be
..open for adoption to animal rescuers and animal lovers until the 14th of December 2009.
..There will be a discounted rate on the reclaimation fee for all dogs.

Unclaimed dogs will be euthanized on the 15th of December 2009.

Cancer Sniffing Dogs

Detecting cancer in its early stages can be difficult, even with the help of the priciest, most advanced medical equipments. However, scientists have discovered that when it comes to finding some forms of this deadly disease, a sensitive well trained doggy nose may work better than the highest technology.

Sounds ridiculous right? In 1989, the British medical journal "The Lancet" printed an anecdotal report about a mutt who developed an obsessive interest in a mole on its owner's leg. Irritated, the owner finally had it checked out and discovered that it was a malignant melanoma. A melanoma that would have eventually killed her... if it were not discovered...

That story, along with many other similar stories, piqued the interest of an American Dermatologist & Skin Cancer Specialist... Dr Armand, from Tallahassee, Florida. Since most melanoma cases go unreported until it's too late to save the patient, he wondered if dogs could be trained to sniff out cancer in its beginning stages.

Dr Armand approached former head of the police canine corps, Duane Pickel, and asked if he knew any dogs who would be up to the challenge. Duane chose his own pet, George, a standard schnauzer.

George was already a highly skilled bomb-sniffing dog. For him to become a cancer-sniffing dog required more rigorous trainings. First, he was taught to sniff out concealed test tubes containing small little bits of malignant melanomas. Then a sample was bandaged to a person, along with many other bandages containing nothing. During dozens of trials, George accumulated over 95% detection rate. Then, finally he was released onto real cancer patients. George managed a 6 out of 7 positive identification rate.

Dogs have highly sensitive nose. They have more than 200million smell-sensing cells in their noses, compared to our human's mere 5million.

They can detect a small packet of drugs in a kitchen full of many other tasty scents (herbs, spices, chicken, beef, cooked meals, uncooked food etc). Or detect a rabbit in a jungle full of scents from different flora and fauna.

Since people and their high-tech equipments have had a lousy track record of finding melanomas in their earliest phases, any help from dogs should be encouraged...it's cheaper, faster and easier too.

Ironically, George who showed the possibilities of such a technique passed away in 2002 from a brain tumor. Maybe he couldn't tell his handlers of his own cancer...

But the work continues... several studies have been conducted, including an attempt to teach dogs to detect bladder cancer by smelling patients' urine. Amazing note: one of the supposedly healthy people in the experiment was found to have a very very early case of bladder cancer when the dog reacted strongly to this guy's supposedly normal urine. He was treated immediately and recovered. He became one of the first few, but not last, cancer patients who owe his life to a dog.

Here's a few tips from Cesar Millan's top 10 travel tips:

1.) Prepare. Don't make it a last minute "pack-and-let's-go." Your dog will sense your anxiety and tension. Be ready days in advance, so that your dog has a normal experience before he has to get in the car or on the plane.

Can't bring your dog along? Find a good substitute pack. In a kennel, your dog should be immediately adopted as a member of the pack. The staff should be able to get your dog focused on what is there for him – and not leave him mourning over the fact that you left. It is a big deal for a dog to detach himself from a pack. The new pack should equal or better the pack he just left.

or leaving your home.

2.) Barking at a specific stimulus - Take time to simulate the cause of the
barking, and practice correcting your dog. If it's the doorbell that sets your
dog off, ring it when no one is coming over, so you can stay focused on the
task at hand: helping your dog overcome this unwanted behavior.

dog should always be next to you or behind you, never out in front. Make sure
you are the first one out the door and the first one to come back in.

World Animal Day in Malaysia was celebrated on 2nd November at Kuala Lumpur Tower...with dogs being allowed to enter the premise! When the management approached SPCA Selangor to celebrate World Animal Day there, we were stunned as the management is entirely Moslems. Dogs in Malaysia, sad to say, are still the most unpriviledged companion animal that is mistreated and abused in any way possible.

The event took place from Noon to 6pm with activities, entertainment and stalls including: “Artists For Animals” Performances (Twilight Action Girl, Hunny Madu, Phlowtron & more), Cheerleaders, Capoiera & Hip-hop dance performances, Interactive Storytelling, Special Appearance by 50st Legion, Animals for Adoption (SPCA & PAWS), Launch of 'Animals Matter to Me Campaign', My Dog Agility & Obedience Demo, NGO booths (WWF, TRAFFIC, MYCAT), Animal Village (Purina, Rhone Ma, Jaafar Taib Wildlife Paintings, Suzy’s Stone Paintings, Petster Magazine, petfinder.my, Addiction (holistic, non animal tested pet food manufacturer), Petalog (pet fashion wear and accessories), Style Essentials (pet grooming), Gajah Gallery (art gallery on paintings featuring elephants, cats, etc), and lots more. One of the highlights of the day was a photography exhibition featuring selected photos of animals taken by the public.

A minimum of 30% of the proceeds taken by the booths were donated to the SPCA instead of paying booth charges to KL Tower. 200 free limited edition T-Shirts were donated by ActionTinToy for early birds! The event went very well and it was made even more special as the government has acknowledged the 'Animals Matter To Me' campaign in Malaysia - organisations throughout the world continue to collect signatures supporting a Universal Declaration of Animal Welfare. Although this event took place outside our normal 2 week window either side of 4th October, it was promoted as a World Animal Day event and incorporated the WAD logo in its advertising. The major event was held on 2/11 at KL Tower (Kuala Lumpur) and covered animal husbandry, grooming, dog training on basic obedience, baking of dog cookies & cup cakes, animal welfare forum on islam and dogs, movies pertaining to humans and animal bonding, films shown about the inhumane killing of animals for human consumption (some of you may have heard of the movie called Earthlings), stone painting of animals, t-shirt painting of animals and most importantly...adoption, adoption, adoption.

We held a Charity Food Fair at the Silver Jubilee Hall on September 28th to mark World Animal Day. The event was supported by the Penang Agility Association who organised a 'Dog Parade' and 'Name the Breed Contest'. The food was good and the event was well supported by the public.

All funds raised at this event will be added to our Building Fund to enable us, at some point in the future, to purchase at least an acre of land to build a better shelter for our animals. At the moment we only have about 6,000 square feet which is far too small. Lily Leng, Administrator.

Here in Malaysia the Remembering Sheena Campaign and Furry Friends Farm celebrated World Animal Day at Bangsar Village Shopping Centre, Kuala Lumpur.

It was special because we had a Dog Walk around the area to create awareness about animals with about 70 members of the public signing up to walk with their dogs. All the dogs were given special scarves by the Animal Asia Foundation, Hong Kong. Animals Asia launched the Dr Dog Programme in Hong Kong and it is now in seven countries including Malaysia, where the programme is run by the Furry Friends Farm.

Furry Friends Farm is a no-kill animal shelter run by Sabrina Yeap. It is about 3 acres and Sabrina rents the place with her own income supplemented by the public's generous contributions.

The Dr Dog programme is one where selected members of the public whose dogs have passed an examination, will be allowed to visit children's homes, old folks homes and we are hoping one day even the hospitals and prisons, God willing.

The dogs bring healing to the sick and lonely and abused. The Dog Walk was led by Malaysia's Dr Dogs followed by the dogs at Furry Friends Farm animal shelter and then the public's dogs. My dog 'Gideon Sunday' was Malaysia's first Dr Dog but, sadly, I had to put him down before the event as he was very old and beginning to suffer.

The main emphasis of our event was on 'education' as most shelters here only focus on collecting donations and putting down unwanted pets and strays. Very little attention is given to educating the public on the responsibilities of keeping a pet and how to show kindness to strays.

We had a screen with educational videos playing.

Muslim dog handlers were treated to a Samak soap demonstration. The soap, marketed by Tahara Global (M) Sdn Bhd, is prepared under strict Islamic guidelines and allows Muslims who come into contact with dogs to wash according to religious prescription. This is to counter the negative perception of muslims about dogs and results in many cases reported in the papers of cruelty shown by municipal council officers towards stray dogs.

Other activities held included dog grooming, a demonstration of the Dr Dog examination procedure and a children's art contest where the first three winners will each be feted to a high tea buffet for two adults and two children, compliments of the Park Royal Hotel.

There was also a cat adoption programme by Petfinder while music was in the air through the fluid fingers of violinist, Dennis Lau, who performed Prelude, an original composition from his upcoming album.

Children entering the art competition were required to draw the Furry Friends Farm's puppies in front of them. It was quite challenging as the puppies moved about here and there. Jojo, our 2nd Ambassador, was there to join in the fun and he helped to cut the FFF's 2nd Anniversary cake. A prize presentation for the children's art contest winners were other highlights that added to the revelry.

Samak soap, cakes and delicacies, pet food, t-shirts with animal logos and packed vegetarian food sponsored by the Dharma Realm Guan Yin Sagely Monastery in Jalan Ampang were sold to raise funds for the FFF, which rescues and rehomes abandoned and abused animals. All the 5 local Chinese papers published our event the following day.

The Pet Safari, Malaysia organized a hugely successful fundraising campaign to benefit SPCA & PAWS to celebrate World Animal Day 2008 which ran from 30th September – 5th October. During the 6 day campaign we raised the magnificent sum of RM 14,500.00 from public donations and this will be shared equally between SPCA & PAWS.

The event successfully created awareness of World Animal Day and we celebrated it with the rest of the world. NGOs successfully raised donations, created awareness and promoted pet adoption by highlighting the plight of sheltered animals. Customers treated their pet with more respect and our four-legged friends got to try and use good quality products via our in-house promotions and the goodies they received. We successfully educated the public by selling copies of 'Silent Cries', a book that started out as the SAVE ANIMALS book project, with the objective of promoting awareness of animal welfare issues and responsible pet ownership in Malaysia through education. ‘Silent Cries’ not only includes true stories from the animals’ perspective, but also valuable information about caring for a pet, fun quizzes, interesting facts and recipes, and also interviews with real people and celebrities who have pets. The book also includes real case pictures of abused animals and much more.

During the event, customers that donated RM 10.00 or more to the NGOs walked away with a rang of goodies such as the limited edition WAD Environmental Friendly Bags, limited edition WAD T-shirts, limited edition WAD baseball caps, special edition recycled pencil, and also goodie bags worth more than RM 50.00. Throughout the event, staff wore WAD T-shirts, caps and paraded with WAD Environmental Friendly Bag to create awareness and to encourage donations.

Booths (stalls) were set at The Pet Bazaar for SPCA, PAWS, and PETSTER Magazine to display and sell merchandise. Petster Magazine (Malaysia’s 1st Free Pet Lifestyle Magazine) covered the event and gave away free magazines. The news of the event will also be available in Pet Lovers Centre and The Pet Safari official website.

To create awareness and encourage participation from the public, 42 photos participated in the WAD Cute & Adorable Animal Photo Contest which was held for 12 days from 29th September to 10th October. All customers that purchase from Pet Lovers Centre from 29th October until 11th October are eligible to vote for the winners. Each RM 25.00 purchased entitles customers to 1 vote. The WAD celebration ended with the announcement of 3 winners with the highest vote for the contest and 10 lucky customers that voted. Alexander The Great and his dog Peritas

Alexander The Great, born 356 BCE in the tiny nation of Macedon, led its small army on an epic mission of global conquest, forging the largest empire the world had yet seen before dying at the age of 32.

His greatest accomplishment was subduing the Persian Empire, the ancient world's only superpower. At the battle of Gaugamela, Alexander routed the Persians by personally leading a cavalry charge into their ranks, straight at their king Darius. This extremely risky move won him eternal glory- though it could have easily cost him his life. It is said that at one point of this battle, a war elephant charged at Alexander and almost trampled him. But at the last moment, Alexander's dog Peritas, charged at the elephant, jumped up, and bit the elephant's lower lip. Peritas hung onto the lip for as long as he could. His dog's attack, gave Alexander just enough time to escape.

Peritas didn't survive the battle. When it was over, the Macedonians recovered his body and gave Peritas a state funeral. Alexander later named a city after his dog.

[Part 2] Warning: Venomous Spider In Singapore

I found it!!! I found out what it's called!!! Yeay! So excited... I've found out what the mysterious Brazilian Spider is called! Look at the pictures and tell me if the spiders look alike...

I have to thank Divemuster who commented on the post "What Spider". I googled Wolf Spider, and found Brown Recluse Spider. Googled that, and found www.brownreclusespider.org , which led me to the above picture...

It is native to the USA, generaly found around the central mid western states southwards to the Gulf of Mexico. Although sub-species can be found else where like South America.

These spiders can and does spread, traveling inside boxes,cargo, in your car boot/trunk etc.

Indoors: they can be found in dark spots, closets, vents, heating ducts, clothes, inside shoes, old books, store rooms, corners, cracks etc. If it's found in bath tubs or toilet bowls, it's because it has fallen in and can't get out.

Outdoors: they are found in storage places like garden sheds, under rocks or inside hollow trunks.

It should be about 1 inch long and one of the ways of controlling its infestation, is by using sticky traps.

This spider build a web only to nest, not to trap insects. It usually eats dead insects, even those killed by insecticide, but will hunt live insects as well.

Bite by this spider might feel like a pin prick, or sometimes, no feeling at all. However, after a few hours, the venom takes action and the wound swells up. Pain begins and intensifies gradually.

Although non-fatal, in severe cases (sensitive person, child or lots of venom injected) the patient may experience such symptoms: fever, shivering, nausea, vomiting, itching, restlessness... eventually leading to shock. Best bet is to be calm. You don't want blood + venom spreading all over your body.

So if bitten, remain calm, trap/kill the spider, bring both patient & spider to hospital, and get immediate treatment. You have a few hours before the symptoms show themselves. Show the spider to the doctor so that they can do research and know what they're dealing with. (Try not to squish it beyond recognition. It needs to be identified)

Most patient need plastic surgery, some who delay treatment suffer more problems like red urine, kidney problems etc.

There's no known antidote to this spider's venom.

What Spider is this? This is the second time it's crawled into my house. I think it gets in through a window that's directly above some thick patch of grass. I've since shut the window.

Warning: Venomous Spider in Singapore

As a precaution, please copy this whole article and reblog/email it. Meanwhile, I will wait for my reply from other establishments (NGO, Goverment Ministries and Hospitals). I want to know if there has been any further reports of incidents concerning this Spider.

I received an e-mail recently. The e-mail says that this venomous spider is commonly found in Brazil and some how made it's way to Singapore. Nobody knows how, but it's common for insects and other creatures to travel cross continents via freight (trains, airplanes, ship).

I hope this is a hoax, but the email came with a logo of Changi General Hospital:

On 1st May 2008, Channel 8 made the first report of this poisonous spider in Singapore.

If it's in Singapore it could easily travel to Malaysia and then to Thailand.

Please note that this spider could be around the house etc...

If you're gonna kill it, smack it with a shoe or newspaper, not with bare hands.

An English man was bitten by it, but he freed it because he didn't know that the spider was venomous.

we are not able to name the species based on the picture alone as we lack
the taxonomy key to do it.

4 According to the web sites information that we have gatheredmajority
of this species of rove beetle live in rice fields.

5 So farwe have not received any information of it being found in
Singapore. We are also unable to confirm that the cause of the skin
condition as shown in the picture submitted is due to contact with this
beetle.

A Puppy-Factory Dog's Story

A PUPPY MILL PUPPY'S STORY

I don't remember much of the place where I was born. It was cramped and dark, and we were never played with by the Humans. I remember Mom and her soft fur, but she was often sick, and very thin. She had hardly any milk for me and my brothers and sisters. I remember many of them dying, and I missed them so.

I remember the day I was taken from Mom. I was so sad and scared, my milk teeth had only just come in, and I really should have been with Mom still, but she was so sick, and the Humans kept saying that they wanted their money and were sick of the "mess" that me and my sister made.

So we were crated up and taken to a strange place. Just the two of us. We huddled together and were scared, still no Human hands came to pet or love us. So many sights and sounds and smells! We are in a store where there are many different animals! Some that squawk! Some that meow! Some that peep! My sister and I are jammed into a small cage. I hear other puppies here. I see Humans look at me through the glass. I like the "little humans", the kids. They look so sweet, and fun, like they would play with me! All day we stay in the small cage, sometimes mean people will hit the glass and frighten us, every once in a while we are taken out to be held or shown to humans. Some are gentle, some hurt us, we always hear "Aw they are so cute! I want one!" but we never get to go with any of them.

My sister died last night, when the store was dark. I lay my head on her soft fur and felt the life leave her small thin body. I had heard them say she was sick, and that I should be sold at a "discount price" so that I would quickly leave the store. I think my soft whine was the only one that mourned for her as her body was taken out of the cage in the morning and dumped.

Today, a family came and bought me! Oh happy day! They are a nice family, they really, really wanted me! They had bought a dish and food and the little girl held me so tenderly in her arms. I love her so much! The mom and dad say what a sweet and good puppy I am! I am named Angel. I love to lick my new Humans! The family takes such good care of me, they are loving and tender and sweet. They gently teach me right and wrong, give me good food, and lots of love! I want only to please these wonderful people! I love the little girl and I enjoy running and playing with her.

Today I went to the veterinarian. It was a strange place and I was frightened. I got some shots, but my best friend the little girl held me softly and said it would be okay. So I relaxed. The vet must have said sad words to my beloved family, because they looked awfully sad. I heard Severe Hip Dysplasia, and something about my heart... I heard the vet say something about back yard breeders and my parents not being tested. I know not what any of that means, just that it hurts me to see my family so sad. But they still love me, and I still love them very much!

I am six months old now. Where most other puppies are robust and rowdy, it hurts me terribly just to move. The pain never lets up. It hurts to run and play with my beloved little girl, and I find it hard to breathe. I keep trying my best to be the strong pup I know I am supposed to be, but it is so hard. It breaks my heart to see the little girl so sad, and to hear the Mom and Dad talk about it might now be "the time." Several times I have went to that veterinarians place, and the news is never good. Always talk about Congenital Problems. I just want to feel the warm sunshine and run, and play and nuzzle with my family.

Last night was the worst. Pain has been my constant companion now, it hurts even to get up and get a drink. I try to get up but can only whine in pain. I am taken in the car one last time. Everyone is so sad, and I don't know why. Have I been bad? I try to be good and loving-what have I done wrong? Oh if only this pain would be gone! If only I could soothe the tears of the little girl. I reach out my muzzle to lick her hand, but can only whine in pain.

The veterinarian’s table is so cold. I am so frightened. The Humans all hug and love me.They cry into my soft fur. I can feel their love and sadness. I manage to lick softly their hands. Even the vet doesn't seem so scary today. He is gentle and I sense some kind of relief for my pain. The little girl holds me softly and I thank her, for giving me all her love. I feel a soft pinch in my foreleg. The pain is beginning to lift, I am beginning to feel a peace descend upon me. I can now softly lick her hand.

My vision is becoming dreamlike now, and I see my Mother and my brothers and sisters, in a far off green place. They tell me there is no pain there, only peace and happiness. I tell the family goodbye in the only way I know how-a soft wag of my tail and a nuzzle of my nose. I had hoped to spend many, many moons with them, but it was not meant to be. "You see," said the veterinarian, "Pet shop puppies do not come from ethical breeders." The pain ends now, and I know it will be many years until I see my beloved family again. If only things could have been different.

Rough Collie vs. Shetland Sheepdog

Size

The Rough Collie (or just Collie) should be about 2 feet tall at it's shoulders. Or in AKC requirements, 22 - 26 inches. It should weigh between 22-34kg. UK breeds could be slightly larger than American breeds. Males are generally slightly taller, but could be lighter or around the same weight as the females.

The Shetland Sheep Dog (or Sheltie) is like a miniature version of the Rough Collie. It should be 13-16 inches tall at the shoulders.

Character

A Collie should have gentle calm but confident nature. It should not be shy, nervous, or aggressive. It should have courage and an instinct to guard it's flock by alerting it's owners to danger. The collie may nip, but should not charge and attack. A collie alerts by lots of barking, yelps and yips. It's a dog that is quite communicative vocally. Early training from puppy hood should decrease but not stop the collie's barking.

The Sheltie is pretty much the same, but they are much more vocal because of their small size. They also have a tendency towards shyness. This can be avoided by proper and consistent socialization beginning from 4 months all through adulthood.
Both Collie and Sheltie are suspicious of strangers and very loyal to the family.

The Collie is good with children and animals, preferring to guard them. Although guarding and herding these children and animals may include nipping which may be painful. The way to avoid this, is to show that you're in charge of the situation, as the collie will check with you first, before "correcting" the "flock"(in this case, 'flock' could be babies, children, hamsters, rabbits, grandparents etc) ... and if you don't take charge and demonstrate leadership skills, then you will be part of the flock as well. Sheep dogs and Shepherd dogs have the tendency to try and maintain order, and don't do very well in a chaotic environment.

The Sheltie, although good with children, may get hurt or injured by kids. When they get hurt,they may nip the children in self defence. Children and Shelties playing together should always be monitored by adults. The kids should be taught that the Sheltie is a fragile dog and they should be gentle and careful when handling it. Other than that, a sheltie would love the kids and watch over them. They will bark or yip a lot to alert it's owners of anything suspicious... not such a great idea when you have a sleeping baby around...

Both Collies and Shelties requires gentle training as it is a dog that is naturally responsive to humans, which means it will put effort into understanding what it's human leader wants from it. Harsh training methods like yelling or rough corrections will make this dog confused and scared. A scared, confused or depressed dog will shut down.

Collies were bred for herding sheep and goats. Queen Victoria fell in love with the breed and it has since been a fashionable breed. Nowadays, there are the Collies bred for droving or herding flock, and Collies bred for the show ring and agility competitions. If you want a collie as a pet, be sure not to buy from a herding line/gene and try to turn it into a sit-at-home-do-nothing pet. It wont work.

Physical & Mental Needs

A Collie needs to be walked daily. However, it doesn't need long walks. 30min per walk, 2x a day would be enough.

A Sheltie, would probably need only 30 min walk once a day. Preferably in the mornings to burn off excess energy. If you find that your Sheltie is still very energetic, then do 15min power walk 2x a day

:: Collie Adult & Pup

Both Collie and Sheltie, need lots of mental stimulation. An idle mind is the devil's playground, and if the Collie gets bored, it could release it's boredom by tearing up furniture and making a lot of noise. The Sheltie would be very noisy and would bark at everything.
Collies and Shelties... Or most sheep dogs need to think, figure something out and act on it. So teach it a lot of tricks. Basic sit, stay, roll over commands would be child's play and very boring for the dog. The best would be to send it to obedience & agility school where it can learn different commands, figure out what the owner wants from a distance and take actions based on those commands.

Grooming for Malaysian Weather

Malaysia has a tropical climate where it's pretty much the same all year round, temperatures can rise up to 35c during dry seasons and be as low as 21c during rainy seasons. Humidity levels are between 75%-80%. Occasionally, during the dry season, there will be some haze.

In 4-season countries, they would say that the dog only sheds twice a year. But in countries like Malaysia, it will shed all year round.

Best remedy, is to invest in some good grooming brushes and combs. Any groomer would be able to assist you in choosing the most suitable products. And get a vacuum cleaner with a large storage compartment and vacuum your house frequently, especially under and behind furniture.

Thorough brushing once a week to remove ALL loose fur. If you can, 2x a weeks would be better. Give more gentle attention to the areas behind the ears, under the armpits, chest, between the hind legs and the puff of fur behind the hind legs. those are the areas that would tangle (matt) up and soil easily.

How would know if you've removed all the loose fur? Every time you brush, the brush will be covered with fur. Keep brushing the same spot until the brush has no more fur to collect. Then, move on to the next spot. Make sure that when you brush, part the fur, and brush from the skin, to the fur ends. If you only brush the surface, the bristles will not be able to reach the loose fur that's closer to the skin. Work systematically. Trust me, if you time yourself, a systematic brush is more effective and more pleasant to the dog than jumping from spot to spot.

These dogs were bred for the cold wet climate of Scotland. In hot countries like Malaysia, it is recommended to keep them indoors or they will suffer in the heat. Especially in the afternoons and dry seasons.

During extra hot times, they will shed even more and may look quite pathetic with limp and straggly fur. What you could do at times like these, is send him to a groomer and have the coat trimmed down to a shorter length. I'd recommend shaving off fur around the belly, armpits and under the paws as dogs loose heat from underneath them.

Dogs loose heat mainly with their mouth by panting, and very little from their under-paw by slight perspiration. Heat is removed from their bellies and under-chest when they lay on cool surfaces. They also need to drink water constantly so that they won't become dehydrated.

Recommendation:

Keep them indoors or in cool areas at times like these.
A cool floor for them to lay on would help a lot.
Spray water on their paws, and under their belly and chest.
Have plenty of water near by.

Rabbits have long been kept as pets in Malaysia, but recently, Malaysians are beginning to discover, learn and appreciate the breeds, characters and maintenance requirements of these pet rabbits ... myself included... so lets learn and discover together...

Did you know that the common white rabbit with red ruby eyes, that we so often see, is actually a recognized breed called the Britannia Petite? Did you know that this breed is known to have a bad/wild temperament and is not suitable for families with small children? In Britain, it's known as Polish Rabbit... The Americans renamed it later.

I've had 3 of these when I was a kid... and they all bit me! Now I know why... The rabbits weren't crazy, that's just the way they are.. and nobody knew! ... WOW! What a revelation...! *gotta pause and wow for a while...*

Did you know that there's even an organization for pure breed rabbits? It's called the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA). Below, is a text from ARBA's website:

Wow! You would be shocked to discover these really interesting reviews on commercial dog food brands (wet food & kibbles)

This will be very helpful information if your dog has:

Skin problems

Why? Read the editor's review:

~~"This food receives a 1 star rating simply because there is nothing lower.

The primary ingredient in the food is corn (it should be meat!). Corn is a problematic grain that is difficult for dogs to digest and thought to be the cause of a great many allergy and yeast infection problems. We prefer not to see this used in dog food.

The next ingredient is by-products. It is impossible to ascertain the quality of by-products and these are usually products that are of such low quality as to be rejected for use in the human food chain, or else are those parts that have so little value that they cannot be used elsewhere in either the human or pet food industries. The AAFCO definition of chicken by-product meal is “a meal consisting of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice.” Digest is material from poultry by-products which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and undecomposed tissue.

The next ingredient if further by-products, this time poultry (unidentifiable source). Animal fat is a further low quality ingredient and is impossible to determine the source. Unidentified ingredients are usually very low quality. AAFCO define this as "obtained from the tissues of mammals and/or poultry in the commercial processes of rendering or extracting. It consists predominantly of glyceride esters of fatty acids and contains no additions of free fatty acids. If an antioxidant is used, the common name or names must be indicated, followed by the words "used as a preservative".

This food uses chemical preservatives (BHA) which is believed to be carcinogenic, and is banned from use in human food.

Lamb meal is the sole named meat ingredient in the food. At 5th on the ingredient list, this is insufficient to make any appreciable impact on the food.

Brewers rice is a waste product – a spent grain that is a by-product of the alcohol industry. The AAFCO definition is “the dried extracted residue of rice resulting from the manufacture of wort (liquid portion of malted grain) or beer and may contain pulverized dried spent hops in an amount not to exceed 3 percent.”

Soybean meal is a poor quality source of protein in dog food, and a common cause of allergy problems. Some believe that it is the number 1 cause of food allergies in dogs (outstripping even wheat).

Corn appears a second time as corn gluten meal. The AAFCO definition of corn gluten meal is “the dried residue from corn after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ, and the separation of the bran by the process employed in the wet milling manufacture of corn starch or syrup, or by enzymatic treatment of the endosperm”. In plain English, that which remains after all the nutritious bits have been removed."~~

Important to note:

Each Brand has different categories for their product. Different line, with different ingredients. That's why you will see the same brand, but different products being rated differently. For example, Royal Canin is rated in 1 Star, 2 Stars and 3 Stars. Check your dog food and find it on Dog Food Analysis website for it's correct rating.

Just because a product is given a 1 Star rating, doesn't mean you should switch product. I did this article so that you can be well informed, and make a choice that would best suit your dog & your wallet. If your dog is healthy and strong with a product that has been rated 1 Star, and you see no need to change, then carry on with that diet. If however, your dog is having some issues (i.e. skin / ear problems), then you might want to consider changing to a higher grade product.

"Dutch ecologist Roxina Soler and her colleagues from the Netherlands Institute for Ecology have discovered that subterranean and aboveground herbivorous insects can communicate with each other by using plants as telephones. [via Cellular News]

'Subterranean insects issue chemical warning signals via the leaves of the plant. This way, aboveground insects are alerted that the plant is already 'occupied’.

Aboveground, leaf-eating insects prefer plants that have not yet been occupied by subterranean root-eating insects. Subterranean insects emit chemical signals via the leaves of the plant, which warn the aboveground insects about their presence. This messaging enables spatially-separated insects to avoid each other, so that they do not unintentionally compete for the same plant.

... The communication between subterranean and aboveground insects has only been studied in a few systems. It is still not clear how widespread this phenomenon is.'"

Fatwa from JAKIM:

We have referred to the "Jawatankuasa Kemajuan Islam Malaysia" regarding the neutering of pets. Below is the "fatwa" issued by JAKIM (July 2002):

"All pets like cats and dogs are allowed to be neutered or spayed in order to maintain the health and welfare of both the animals and the community."

"Bahawa mengembiri binatang kesayangan seperti kucing atau anjing hukumnya adalah diharuskan dengan sebab-sebab tertentu iaitu bagi menjaga muslahat ummah."

After studying the messages of the aforementioned "mazhab"s and the medical viewpoint of the SPCA animal experts, 'JAKIM' has decided that neutering of cats for reasons of 'maslahat' is acceptable. It is in agreement with 'qaedah' (way) Fiqhiyyah which states "To choose the lesser of two evils".

Make an Appointment & Preparing your Pet for the Operation

All spaying/neutering surgeries are by appointment only. Please call our clinic at 03-40243446 or 012-2581041 (Mr G R Krishnan).
Please adhere to the following rules:
- Your pet should be fasted from 8pm onwards the night before the surgery (applies to food and water).
- Your pet must be in good health – sick pets will be rejected for the surgery. Please get your pet treated at a government or private clinic first.
- Do inform us if your female pet is currently on heat or pregnant (on heat or pregnant pets will have higher risks during surgery).
- Make sure your pet is clean– including getting the ticks/flea problem under control.
- Cats should be brought to the clinic in carriers/cages and dogs should be leashed at all times.
- This clinic is only for local or mixed breed pets, and the subsidized fees only apply to lower-income owners, animal rescuers and people caring for strays in their communities.
On the day of surgery:
- Come to the clinic early, preferably before noon. Although appointments are made for the day, it is a first-come first-serve basis on that particular day.
- Register with the guard at the gate.
- Make sure cat is secured in a carrier/cage and dog is on a leash. Dog is to be tied at the designated area.
- Come into the Klinik Kembiri’s office area and fill in the required forms. Please inform us if your pet has been sick recently or if it is on heat/pregnant. You should clarify all enquiries before the surgery begins.
- It is advisable to stay in the clinic area until your pet recovers from the anesthetics, before taking them home.

Post Operation Tips

Take care while carrying your pet home, trying not to move or touch the operated area.
Your pet may take anywhere from 1 – 3 hours before it starts to wake up from the anesthetic. During this time, it is important to place your pet in a safe, sheltered and quiet area for recovery, where it won’t not fall down and hurt itself (as your pet may not be able to balance itself yet).
Place your pet on some bedding to keep them warm. Your pet may urinate/defecate while still anaesthetized, so be sure to keep them clean and dry.
Offer your pet food and water only when your pet is up and able to walk properly (your pet may drown in the water bowl if it is still sleepy). Sometimes, your pet will only gain its appetite the day after the operation.
During this recovery, some pets may vomit. Do not be alarmed, it is common for this occur.
Confine your pet for 5-7 days after the day of surgery (if possible in a cage), to limit their activity and movement. This ensures proper healing of the wound.
Check on the operated area at least once a day for the next 2 weeks. Make sure the area is always clean and dry, and the wound is not opened. If you notice any problems such as bloody discharge, pus, sudden swelling, foul smell, or opening of the wound, please contact a vet right away!
Some pets may have a bandage over the operated area. You may leave it on for 3-4 days, as long as it is clean and dry. Your pet may lick the area a little, but do check that they do not lick and bite excessively.
Do not bathe your pet for at least 7 days after the surgery. If your pet is dirty, wipe it with a damp towel. Please keep the incision site dry to prevent infections.
You may come back to Klink Kembiri for a free post-operative check up about 2 weeks after the operation (please call us first to make sure we are open). Some pets that need their stitches removed can be done at this time.
If any problem arises, please contact a vet as soon as possible.

Fasting your pet is important and your whole family should be informed and follow the rule...

My own experience:
I brought my cat to Klinik Kembiri, while waiting for my cat to be operated on, I got to know other pet owners there. One couple there, maybe in their 40s, have their 2 dogs in operation. While we were chatting, the vet came out and told them that one of their dogs had complications during surgery. The doctor asked them if anybody had fed the dog soup the night before. They denied, then the doctor continued that some of the fluids had gone into the dogs lungs, and the fluids looks and smells like Campbells mushroom soup. He went in again, and brought out part of a breathing appliance... That tube thinggie that goes down the throat to supply oxygen. True enough, it did look like mushroom soup and even had some solids there which he suspects are pieces of mushrooms. He told the couple that they doing the best they can to remove the fluids and solids... Thankfully, after about 30min of tensed waiting, the doctor came out again to say that their dog survived, but should be monitored more closely for the next 24hrs.

Feed your pet at around 7pm, then 8pm, remove all sources of food and water. This includes water from the toilet, pond, pool etc. Make sure that your children, parents, grandparents and neighbour knows that your pet is being fasted for an operation. Your pet, may beg and make pittyful sounds or behavior, but you and your family will just have to be strong. Safest way, is to isolate or confine your pet to prevent any accidents.

Spaying female dogs are usually very bloody operation. This is the least bloody of the videos. I think the vet reduced the bloodiness by stuffing a gauze under the skin. The dog is sedated, and probably breathing from an oxygen mask. Spaying a female dog, is probably the messiest of the 4 videos shown here.

Identify a Responsible Breeder

How to know if your pup is from a responsible breeder?

The breeder should be accessible throughout the puppy’s 15 years of life, by phone or email.
You are welcomed to the breeding ground before purchasing the pup. The breeding ground may be the breeder’s home, or a land out of the city. Note: Most breeders only entertain serious buyers, as they are busy people, and do not equate themselves to pet shops or shelters. So understand if he will only make an appointment with you when you are very close to making a decision.
When you meet the breeder his first instinct is to show you the male, female dogs and where the litter is kept. He will bring you to the dogs, and not the other way around… since he has nothing to hide. If he doesn’t do that say something like “I don’t mind going with you to get the dogs” then, judge his body language and decide if you should be suspicious or not. Maybe it’s feeding time, or they’re doing some construction, or the litter is in his bedroom etc.
Don’t start telling the breeder about you, he should be curious and concern of where his pups are going to end up. His big question in his mind should be “are my pups going to be safe with these people?” … And so expect to be questioned by the breeder. If they don’t seem bothered, then something’s wrong.

Expected questions

Examples of questions the breeder is expected to ask you may vary, some will ask more, some will ask less. These questions will give the breeder an idea of the kind of owner you are going to be. They also give you an idea if this breeder is breeding because he loves the dogs, or breeding for money.

Where do you stay? What kind of house?
Who’s going to be part of the pup’s family?
What’s your working schedule like?
Who is home all the time? Who goes to school? Who works?
Where will the dog sleep?
Other animals in the house?
Had a dog before?
What’s your occupation?
Who is going to be the direct owner of the dog, the alpha dog, the one fully responsible?
They may want your address and contact details and ask if they could visit the dog occasionally.

A good breeder may later, confiscate the dog if they discover that the new owners are ill treating the dog. Responsible breeders feel that the puppy is still part of their family even after they have sold the pup to you. They may still address the pup as “my boy/girl”. That tells you that they do not treat the pup as a man made ‘thing’ like a car or house.

Examples of questions you should be asking the breeder.

These questions will lead to an easier relationship between you and your puppy. They will also help you assess the breeder. You only want to support good, responsible and passionate breeders. The breeder will also expect you to ask these questions:

What food and play schedule, is the pup and mom following currently?
Can you contact the breeder anytime for help? If your puppy/dog develops some personality or health problems at age 5, for example, can you call the breeder and find out if your dog’s parents had the same problem? If so, how did the breeder handle the situation? Good breeders should be generous with suggestions, or recommend you to someone who can help you. He should never avoid you.
Who is the current vet? Address and contact numbers should be given to you. You should keep the original vaccination card.
Any documentation or certificates of the puppy’s family tree? Can you have a photocopy of them so that you can trace your pup’s history?
Can you take the pup at 4 months? This is the safest age, where the puppy would have learnt basic (human & doggy) social skills.
If long coated dogs, who is their regular groomer? Get the address and contacts.

Information of the puppy's vet and groomer will be very helpful for you to learn more about the puppy and the breeder. These 2 professionals, would have knowledge of your pup's history. They would know the character, quirks, or behavior of the pup's parents. Playfullness, coat condition, medical condition, minor skin irritations etc... Just chat with them, and get frequent consultations...

Puppy Factory vs. Responsible Breeder

Ok, so you've seen some videos. Yes, there are more videos and pictures. Just search the web, or ask around. Yes, these are in the United States of America, but it doesn't mean that there are none here, in your own country. The only reason you don't find videos of puppy factories in your own country, is because nobody has videoed it. No press has been notified. No groups or bodies have made strong enough hoo-hah over it.

In Malaysia, these puppy factories are located in shabby communities, in abandoned houses, in shop lots that have no neighbors. Or even in small warehouses where their neighbors are car workshops or bulk printers, with machines running continuously and garbage all over the place to drown out the barking and stench.

So how do puppy factories affect you & your dog directly?

Well, for starters, your puppy was removed from its parents at 4 weeks, maybe even earlier. A puppy begins its socialization lessons at 6 weeks. By then, the puppy is sitting in a lonely cubical at some pet shop with other blur puppies as neighbors.

Socialization and behavior ethics are learnt in the pack, where there are pack leaders. The mother dog, acts as the pack leader, and the puppy’s siblings are its pack members. Here, they learn about boundaries. Boundaries like acceptable play area and where they can roam, and where is too far. When they play with each other, they learn their strength, and learn what is considered ‘playing too rough’ and what is acceptable. They learn how to read another dog’s body language. Certain body language calls for play, some body language says ‘stop playing’, body language that says ‘bad mood’, ‘going to pick a fight’ etc, etc. With their mom, they will learn the acceptable way of greeting each other. Dining etiquette like who eats first, what’s the acceptable way to approach food, the acceptable way to share food, the acceptable way to behave, when food is around etc, etc, etc. It is at this age that they also learn how to ‘fall into’ the hierarchy system. Humans at the top, mother dog, other dominant dogs, your pup, and other submissive dogs. Yes, this may surprise you… These behaviors do not come naturally. They are taught, or conditioned.

Similar with humans, we need to be toilet trained, we are taught that when someone is working, don’t disturb. We learn certain body language that says ‘hostility’, or ‘friendly’,’ approachable’, ‘upset’ etc. We are also conditioned to dining and behaviors. How to greet a peer, and older person, a younger person or a stranger. What’s considered rude, and what’s acceptable.

You might have gotten your pup at a considerably low financial price. The process of purchasing the puppy might have been easy. No appointments were made, nobody questioned you, nobody assessed your answers and told you to go home and think about it. No complicated documents, and name transfers. And, after bringing your pup home, no spot checks, or phone calls asking how the pup is doing, yada, yada, yada. All you had to do was walk into any pet shop, pickup a pup, pay money and it’s all yours to do with as you please. Come to think of it, it’s easier to buy a breathing, loving dog with feelings than to buy a car.

What a lot of people have to discover many months later, is going to cost them a lot. Lots of money in medical bills, and lots of energy/stress, with behavior problems.

Health Problems

Skin problems, very common recently in breeds like Schnauzer, Miniature Pinscher, Doberman etc. Bald spots. skin is flaky, like dandruff. Crusts froms on the skin, all over the back.

Recurring eye problems, very common in Shih Tzu, and now beginning to surface in breeds like the Pug.

Neurological and/or sudden aggression problems, aggression without reason, used to be common in the American Cocker Spaniel. Note: This problem has now decreased drastically, since the breed had gone out of trend. Puppy factory/mills don’t produce this breed anymore, and only by sheer diligence of responsible breeders, the genes that caused this ugly behavior have been weeded out.

Dogs with wrinkles like Shar Pei and Bulldog, have to get surgery, costing thousands, to remove excess skin. This was created when irresponsible breeders discovered that the more wrinkles a dog has, the more expensive they could sell it for. What happens is that as the pup grows, the wrinkles increase even more in the wrong places like the eye areas, pubic regions & paw pads. The excess wrinkles in these sensitive areas gather dirt and is very difficult to clean, causing skin problems, some lead to skin rotting.

Breathing problems in short snout breeds that were irresponsibly breed, like Shih Tzus, Pekingese, Pug. There are breed standards for short snout dogs where there’s a minimum length for a dog’s nose, any shorter than the approved length and the dog will frequently have breathing difficulties.

Behavior Problems

Unsocialized or badly socialized pups will have learning disabilities, psychological problems, emotional problems and others…

Seen a dog or puppy pee and poop in its sleeping quarters? Or has no worries walking over or stepping on pee and poop? That’s because it was conditioned/trained that way. Growing up in confined cages or cubicles, they don’t really have space to pee in one area, poop in another area, play in a different area, and sleep in a different area far away from the smell.

What about a dog that is constantly overexcited, 24/7? Doesn’t know how to relax, just always bouncing off walls, jumping all over the place, on to tables, onto people, banging and throwing themselves onto people… just won’t sit still and can’t control itself.

The total opposite of that, is extreme fear. It’s always running and hiding, the slightest sound or pat on its back will cause it to yelp and jump in fear. When you are able to corner or get hold of it, it will freeze stiff, or react aggressively.

Other conditions may be the inability to be around with other dogs. Always getting into fights… either starting the fights, or somehow drawing fights to them.

Excessive howling or yelping at certain times of the day. It just won’t stop, no matter what you do, as though it’s deeply programmed into your pup’s system and you can’t uninstall that program

How do responsible breeders weed out negative health problems?

Responsible breeders only mate the best dog (male) with the best bitch (female). They are assessed based on bone structure, teeth or jaw alignment, skin condition, fur condition, behavior or attitude, learning ability, health conditions and a few others.

They look out for what are called faults. Muzzle too long/short. Ears and eyes too big/small, long/short. Legs length, width apart, toes pointing in or out, distance between fore and hind legs, etc. Backbone curved or straight. If there are any genetically caused skin conditions the dog should not be mated. Fur density, texture, length. Is the dog overly aggressive or docile for its breed type? Is the dog overly lazy or hyperactive? Level of confidence. Learning ability, attention span and energy level. Genetically inherited internal health issues like kidney problems, early age joint problems, liver problems etc.

If any dog doesn’t meet the acceptable standard, or shows signs of ill health, that dog will not, and should not be allowed to mate.

Responsible breeders will almost always have their dogs extensively checked by a vet before mating it. Throughout a bitch’s pregnancy, she should be regularly checked by a vet. The puppies, once born, should also be given a clean bill of health by a vet.

Only irresponsible breeders will ‘simply’/’chin-chai’ mate one dog with another. It’s that ‘chin-chai’, ‘tidak apa’ attitude that eventually builds up to the many problems we now face.

Note: Those that I have listed above are just some of the problems, and will vary depending on breed. The best way for you to find out, is do some research on the particular breed you’re interested in. Buy some books specifically on that breed, search the internet and join online forums, find out the next dog show in your area, and speak to the breeders there. 90% of the participants there are responsible breeders. Talk to them, ask questions, get their contacts, and take pictures of their dogs. Understand that there is a lot to learn about each and every breed. A fan of the German Shepherd Dog may have no clue of the Doberman. A Shih Tzu breeder may be clueless about the Pekingese.

Puppy Factories or Puppy Mills, Call Themselves Breeders

Many Malaysians, don't register the word 'mill' as 'factory. So in my communication, I have been using the words 'Puppy Factory'. It's rampant here in Malaysia. If you bought your dog from a pet shop, there's an extremely high chance that you've supported the Puppy Factory business.

I am not blaming you or trying to cause hurt. You probably didn't know better. However, what I'm trying to do here is create an awareness. To share knowledge with the public, and I hope you do the same... I don't hope for you to cry, or get angry, or emotional in anyway. What I do hope for, is that you open your mind to knowledge, and after this, do more research of your own... to discover what has been kept from you, your friends and relatives for so many years...

.In USA, they shoot old broken down machines (read old dogs). In Malaysia, because we don't carry guns, Malaysians can't shoot dogs that are too old to breed (read churn out puppies for sale). So, what is normally practised in Malaysia is:

Throw puppy into monsoon drain. Cheras monsoon: an old, semi-blind Shih Tzu was found, wrapped in a cloth and dumped into roadside monsoon.
Release dog onto roadside. Klang: Aging dobermann found wondering aimlessly & disoriented by it's surroundings, believed to be dumped by puppy factory for being too old to breed. The Dobermann was covered by genetically caused skin disease, common in dogs that suffer from in-breeding (read incest, father mate with daughter, mother mate with grandson, cousins & siblings mating each other etc)
Release dog just outside factory's gate. Somewhere in Selangor: Aged Labrador retriever was thrown out of a home based puppy factory. The dog had no where to go and loitered at the front gate, sometimes howling & whining to go back inside. Every few hours or so, it's owners would come out and try to scare the dog away.
Bury alive. In the northern region, where there's a lot of land space, deep holes are dug, and old dogs, sick or deformed puppies are buried alive.
Sold for meat to illegal exotic-animal restaurants. These restaurants are illegal, as they sell dishes of exotic and endangered species. They support illegal animal trade, poaches etc. They are wanted by the government, Jabatan Perhilitan, and international organizations. If you know of any of these places, make a report to CITES, PETA, WWF (international) and Animal Asia. You can google their websites.
Dumped at the doors of local shelters. They are, usually dumped and not handed over, because these people want to remain anonymous. The fact that they want to remain that way, shows that they know that what they're doing is questionable.

.In dog fur language,
Matt-ed fur = tangled up fur...
Felt-ed fur = fur that is soo badly tangled, it usually covers a portion of the body, and is tangled right down to the skin.

Some long coated dogs from puppy factories are never groomed. So their fur is so badly felted, that the dogs have difficulty turning their heads, because the fur would pull, and that would hurt. The felt also makes it difficult for the dogs to move their limbs. As time goes on, early stage arthritis sets in. Mats and felts also cover their anus and privates. forming like a 'mesh' and trapping poop against their anus. Or, keeping urine against the skin around their 'privates'. This leads to severe skin problems, as well as swelling of the anal area.

Responsible breeders however, take good care of their dogs. Most in Malaysia have nice rooms for their dogs. Responsible/good breeders are usually breed specific. Meaning they only focus on 1 or 2 types of breeds. Versus having many many different type of trend breeds. They are concern of where the puppies are going to go, what their life is going to be like, not just as a pup, but their concerns stretch till the puppy's old age. Their dogs are happy, calm, very very healthy and contented. More on this topic on another post.

.In Malaysia, the euthanasia (in other words, killing by drug overdose from an injection) process works pretty much the same way. Difference here, is that the dogs are not 'put-down' one by one but in groups, there's no freezer, instead of 'body bags' we use black garbage bags, and it's the garbage collector who collects the dogs.

Mus-Mus (pronounced as Moose-Moose). A rescued Shih-Tzu. He was almost crushed by his rescuer's car. After posting up notices, and waiting for the phone call that never came, his rescuer passed him over to his current and permanent owner. He's blind in one eye, and half-blind in the other. He is also going deaf... Poor old guy...

Doesn't he remind you of CJ7?

Mus-mus going through the grooming process. He's always very stiff while grooming. As though he's petrified of me. We don't know what his history is, but i find this behaviour very common among puppy-mill (read puppy factory) dogs. Sometimes, we wonder if he was used as a breeding machine when he was younger, and then dumped on the street when he got too old to be of any profit making machine. Mus-Mus, if that be true, then on behalf of all humans, I am very very sorry.

Illusion, the Beautiful Rescued Mixed Breed

Illusion, named after Cesar Millan's wife, was given away by a pet shop. They didn't know what to do with her, since nobody wanted to buy her and she was growing past sell-able age. Nobody wanted to buy her as she was a mixed breed, and they didn't appreciate her color. We have now started calling her our own miniature Afgan Hound since she resembles one. Her owners have had her for close to a year now, and her fur length has remained the same. How could anyone not want such a beautiful and gentle dog. Illusion, you have found a happy home. God bless you.

Balding Illusion. Her mommy and daddy has never seen her bald. Since it is now heat season, it's best to shave her bald so that it's easier to find ticks, as well as keep her clean.

Ear wax. Color of ear wax, should range from clear to yellow. Like the picture. If the wax is brown, ear mites are begining to develop. If it's black, there's an ear mite infestation. The next stage would be infection..

Grooming Rescued Mini Schnauzer Named Cash

This is Cash the Mini Schnauzer. His mommy and daddy is soo busy at the moment and could not shower him with attention as often as they'd like to. What with wedding plans, fixing up their new house and meeting deadlines at work all happening at the same time... May & June truly is the busiest time of the year.

His mommy panicked and called me when she saw the wound behind his ear cause by scratching. Time to clean him up...

Grooming process begins with bribery with treats. Just like how children get sweets when they visit the doctor, or ice cream when they visit the dentist... We start off by trimming the nails first.

Most of the fur is removed first. To check his skin for any scratches, wounds or ticks. It also helps that there's less fur to wash and dry, making the grooming process a lot faster. Fur from his ears are removed. The ear wax are removed with cotton, cotton buds and a special anti-mites ear cleaning solution.

After Cash has had his bath, he is blown dry. Then a more detailed clipping process.

Finish. For practical reasons, his fur is shaved right down to the skin from tummy to just before

Where is the Yellow Dog?

This is a puppy who was dumped into the sea, near an island called Pulau Selat Kering. She was thrown into the sea, and left to swim to the island. She, and hundreds of other dogs were considered a nuisance by villagers of a near by island and sea food destination called Pulau Ketam. Pulau Selat Kering (PSK) is deserted, no food and no drinking water. The area is going through a dry season and so there has not been rain fall for months. Thirsty dogs have been drinking sea water, giving them massive dehydration. Some have died, and those who survived, suffer from kidney and liver problems. The dogs who are still alive, only managed to do so by feeding on the carcases of their dead friends, or relatives. As if that's not bad enough, there are predators like monitor lizards and venomous snakes.

Mainlanders initiated a rescue mission on 1st May 2009. Yes, Labour's Day, a day where everyone should be resting, a small group of people, got together, charted a boat and went out to survey Pulau Selat Kering (English translation: Pulau: Island; Selat: Straits; Kering: Dry).

This is Kuning. Kuning works on a kelong (floating fish farm), just adjacent to PSK. He belongs to the kelong workers who have bonded with him, and another black dog called Hitam. During the day, he plays with the workers (Adi, Bono and Shafi), swims to and from the kelong and PSK, and acts as Public Relations Dog, welcoming visitors to the kelong. In the evenings, the kelong workers feed Kuning before having their own dinner. At nights, Kuning starts his shift as guard dog, alerting his owners to in coming boats.

Since the start of the rescue mission Kuning has volunteered his expertise to the rescuers. He helps by going into PSK (now known as Hells Island), and luring the abandoned dogs to the fresh water and kibbles that the volunteer rescuers have left around the edges of Hells Island. When he can, Kuning will also encourage some dogs, to swim back with him, to the kelong where they will be fed and given clean drinking water.

On the morning of 19 May 2009, Kuning went on his usual survey in Hells Island (PSK). He never came home. For days, Adi, Bono and Shafi (his owners, friends, and fellow kelong workers) took their boat out, and went round the island looking for Kuning. They told us, that whenever Kuning goes into Hells Island, they would hear his barks and howls. Since 19 May, they have not seen or heard him. A hunt started on 20 May 2009 to locate and return Kuning to his home and rightful owners.

Please keep an eye out for Kuning. It is believed that he has been abducted and brought to Kuala Lumpur. Some tip offs has pointed to the Bukit Bintang area and some to Ampang or Setapak.

Please take note that:

Kuning is a fairly large dog, almost the size of a German Shepherd.
He is very friendly and playful.
He also has a black scar on his right waist

It Makes a Difference to This One

Based on Loren Eisley's story: The Starfish

I awoke early, as I often did, just before sunrise to walk by the ocean's edge and greet the new day. As I moved through the misty dawn, I focused on a faint, far away motion. I saw a youth, bending and reaching and flailing arms, dancing on the beach, no doubt in celebration of the perfect day soon to begin.

As I approached, I sadly realized that the youth was not dancing to the bay, but rather bending to sift through the debris left by the night's tide, stopping now and then to pick up a starfish and then standing, to heave it back into the sea. I asked the youth the purpose of the effort. "The tide has washed the starfish onto the beach and they cannot return to the sea by themselves," the youth replied. "When the sun rises, they will die, unless I throw them back to the sea."

As the youth explained, I surveyed the vast expanse of beach, stretching in both directions beyond my sight. Starfish littered the shore in numbers beyond calculation. The hopelessness of the youth's plan became clear to me and I countered, "But there are more starfish on this beach than you can ever save before the sun is up. Surely you cannot expect to make a difference."

The youth paused briefly to consider my words, bent to pick up a starfish and threw it as far as possible. Turning to me he simply said, "I made a difference to that one."

I left the boy and went home, deep in thought of what the boy had said. I returned to the beach and spent the rest of the day helping the boy throw starfish in to the sea.

An estimated number: 200 dogs on pulau selat kering. Some say 300, some say 400...Nobody can rightfully estimate a good estimation, since nobody can make it to the middle of the island. The furtherest one can go is the edge of the island, standing on the mangrove roots. No human can move on ground. The mud is way too soft. In the heat of the day, if one steps onto the mud, he/she will sink knee deep. GPS mapping are in fragments, GoogleMaps is backdated, MPK maps are not detailed. No clear map, no topography map, no... nothing!

Three weeks have passed... less than 30 lives saved.
Tides are unpredictable... even the locals cant predict. You cant see, but there are mangrove trees underwater... trapping your feet as you swim. The currents are strong, and change rapidly.

Worst case scenario: someone gets sucked underwater by the current... person gets pulled under the kelong... and is trapped against the kelong nets, and under the kelong planks...

That's why only the best swimmers are allowed out, only those with experiences swimming in deep sea can go into water. That's why no less than three (3) people, and no more than five (5) can be there...

"what difference does it make?" some demand... "you're mad... chi sin... stupid...gila" others curse...

It makes a difference to GRACE... It makes a difference to HOPE... It makes a difference to GARANG... it makes a difference to SERENE ADRIANNE... It makes a difference to KUNING... It makes a difference to MERCY...It makes a difference to CHANTEK... It makes a difference to the boatmen who ferries us up and down... It makes a difference to the coffeeshop women who serves us breakfast while we wait for the boat... it makes a difference to my family... It makes a difference to my circle of influence... it makes a difference to the children who will learn from us adults... exponential difference...

You "THINK" i'm mad... I think, i'm passionate... and i "think" you're mad, and irresponsible, and cruel, and uncompassionate, and ignorant, and jahil, and in denial, and selfish, and greedy, and shallow, and dense, and short sighted, and I can go on...

If they are saved, it makes a difference to them...
It makes a difference to EACH and EVERY-ONE of THEM...
IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE TO THE FUTURE.
